A plumber has 2 pipes. One is 5 times as big as the smaller pipe. He cuts away 3.3 of the bigger pipe. The remaining pipe is now 3 times bigger than the small pipe. How big is the smaller pipe? How big was the larger pipe at first? What is the total measurement of both pipes together?

let smaller pipe be x, larger pipe becomes 5x

now

5x-3.3=3x

2x=3.3

x=1.65m

so smaller pipe is 1.65m

larger pipe is 5*1.65=8.25m

total measurement=1.65+8.25=9.9m
