My bird killed her fourth egg?!

+3 votes
Hi my parakeet just laid her first clutch of eggs. She laid three eggs and has been incubating them well. I found a fourth egg cracked on the bottom of the cage, on the opposite side of the cage as the nest box. When I bred a different pair of budgies, the mother of the current clutch destroyed their first egg, too. Why did she do this? How can I keep her from doing it again? If she continues to do this, should I foster the eggs? (I have a pair of society finches and another pair of parakeets) I have already bred another pair of parakeets and all the chicks survived.
