How do we know the universe we are looking at is still there?

+4 votes
We are shown pictures of the universe that are billions of years old. The pictures have taken billions of years to reach us so how do we know what we see is still there. How do we know that the universe is not now mostly empty and most of what we are looking at is no longer there.
