As the hight of an object above the surface of the earth increases its potential energy remains the same?

No. Potential energy is STORED enegry. Potential energy can be measured in footpounds, that is the number of pounds x the hieght it is from the ground.  For example, if you drop a car off a jack, it probably won't hurt the car.  If you drop the same car off the back of a truck, it will cause minor damage. If you drop it out of an airplane total destruction.  If you double the height, it will double the potential energy.
