definition of offal

In carpentry & other types of woodworking, offal is the piece of wood that falls off when trimming the board to the length you are after. Note that that usually requires 2 cuts, 1) the precut to square up the board & cut out any checks (aka cracks & splits from drying) 2) the finish cut that takes to the length you were after to begin with.
