I stored property by permission of landlord, if the unit burned down is the landlord responsible to pay my losses

I rented a flat in a home ,the unit was small and had no storage space I obtained permission from the owner to utilize part of a garage on property as store , a few years went by and my agreement stood firm, well the garage was burned to the ground and insurance was for structure only,but the owner didnt rebuild and pocketed the money I want to know if because he let me use it is he responsible to pay me for my losses?
