is the motel liable if my things burnt up in the fire while staying there

Depends on the cause of the fire. If, for example, you are smoking in a non-smoking room and something so happens to catch fire, then the motel has no liability. Now if it is an electrical short due to imporperly maintained appliances, then they probably are liable. I suggest asking a lawyer if you are considering a lawsuit.
