According to the "Acts of St Timothy" written by Polycrates, a later bishop of Ephesus, stated that under the emperor Nerva in the year 97 A.D, St. Timothy was slain with stones and clubs by the heathens; as he was trying to oppose the idolatrous ceremonies on a festival called the Katagogia, kept on January 22, on which day they walked in troops everyone carrying in one hand an idol and in the other a club. His relics were transported to the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople during the reign of Constantius. The Coptic Church honors the martyrdom of St. Timothy and his feast is celebrated on 22 January.
