You can use a mattress without a boxspring, but the mattress won't last as long because the boxspring springs help take some of the shock and pressure off the mattresss springs. Another purpose it serves is to make it easier to get it and out of bed, because it makes the mattress taller. A boxspring's wooden frame also makes a solid base for the mattress, allowing you just to use wooden slats to hold it up instead of a solid piece of wood.
