can you put hardwood mulch next to your houes ?

Keep your mulch (and your garden beds) as far away form the house's walls as you can. Use only resistant mulches with large (1 inch) particles and no fines. This reduces weed growth and provides for a long service life (see what the roads people specify locally)
Don't forget to have regular home inspections.  However, I WOULD personally be concerned about any of the HARDWOOD mulches near my house, because they contain wood that termites may be drawn to attack. I usually rake it back from the foundation about 2' or so. Mulch doesn't cause termites, but they do like to eat it.
