The name of the church is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  The slang term Mormon, comes from the belief in the Book of Mormon, which is the history of two families of Israelites in the time between the Old and New Testaments. LDS members are encourages to read daily scriptures from the Old and New Testaments as well as from the Book of Mormon, and Mormon was a man who recorded part of the ancient history in the book that bears his name. Mormons believe in God, the Heavenly Father, his son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit just like most people of the various Christian faiths, and they, like most ofthe others believe that their is the one true church. In answer to other questions posed here, LDS Members are not a cult unless you consider that to be worshiping Jesus, the church stopped the practice of polygamy many years ago, and those who wanted to continue that practice were excommunicated and became the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ (or FLDS), establishing remote communes and follwing false prophets.
