What will kepp skunks out of my yard?

  • You can try bright lights or motion sensor lights -- skunks are nocturnal and prefer to stay away from bright lights.
  • Don't leave pet food out in your yard at night.
  • If you have fruit and/or nut trees, try to keep the fruits and nuts picked up from the ground underneath them -- otherwise you're creating a skunk salad bar!
  • Make sure you don't have exposed trash or compost piles in your yard because they can be major skunk attractors. Keep everything in containers/cans with tight-fitting lids.
  • Skunks really like to eat grubs, so if your yard is grub-heavy you may want to try to get rid of those first and see if the skunks stay away.
  • There also are some commercial products, or you can try homemade pepper spray.
