Can a portrait artist use a commissioned work for self promotion?

+3 votes
I have just begun my business (formally) painting commissioned portraits. I wanted to know if I can use images of paid commissioned portraits that I created but no longer own for self promotion. Do I need to get permission from the person who originally commissioned the work, or permission from the person whose image is in the portrait? If I wanted to make a copy of a portrait that I painted but no longer own for resale, can I do it?
