Hiroshima is the capital of Hiroshima Prefecture, and the biggest city in the Chūgoku locale of western Honshu, the biggest island of Japan. It is best known as the first city in history to be focused by an atomic weapon when the United States Army Air Forces dropped a nuclear shell on it at 8:15 am on August 6, 1945, close to the end of World War II. The city's name signifies "Wide Island" in Japanese.
