Does my HVAC system need an annual check-up?

I always see ads for "system check-ups." Are they worth it or just a way for the repair companies to make more money?

Annual HVAC check-ups can give you peace of mind and perhaps find little issues before they become big problems. A lot of companies will deduct the cost of the check-up if you have to have a service call that same year. A thorough HVAC check-up should include a check of drains, connections, refrigerant levels and filters. The technician should also lubricate moving parts, check the thermostat, clean the blower and clean/change the filters.
