X=4             5-2(X)=12      3X=12      3X/3=12/3     X=4

check  5-2(4)=12         3(4)=12

5-2x=12
       5-2(8.5)=12
       5-17=12
So x= 8.5

I think you have just solved 5-2x=-12 and not 5-2x=12

5-2x=12

5- -2x=12

5++2x=12

x=3.5

5-2x=12

(if you change the side, you change the sign.  take the negative 2x to the right it becomes positive and bring the positive 12 to the left it becomes negative)

Therefore

5-12=2x

-7 = 2x

(Bring the multiply by 2 on the right it becomes divide by 2)

-7/2 =x

-3.5 = x

Well 5-2X = 12

So 5- (2 x X) = 12        5--7=12

So 2X=-7

And X is -3.5
